The Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival was held under the name "Asia Port Festival in KANMON88 Strait Fireworks Festival" as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the railway industry. The event was sponsored by the Shimonseki 21st Century Association on the Shimonseki side and the Moji 21st Century Town Planning Association on the Moji side, and was born as Japan's largest fireworks festival, with 13,000 fireworks launched from both sides of the Kanmon Strait.
