Matsuyama Dogo Autumn Festival松山秋祭り

The Matsuyama Autumn Festival is an annual celebration held from October 5 to 7 at 24 shrines throughout Matsuyama City. This series of festivals dates back to the 17th century, when it was established by the Matsuyama clan administration to express gratitude for the harvest, family safety, and prosperous business.

During the festival, participants carry mikoshi, which are portable shrines in the shape of squares. There are mikoshi carried by men, women, and even children. The bearers, known as Tanpu or Mikoshimori, wear happi and hachimaki as they knead their way through the participating shrines. The head of the mikoshi sits atop the Okamikoshi, giving instructions and inspiring the bearers while adjusting the timing.

The highlight of the festival is the "fighting mikoshi" event, which takes place at several famous locations including Dogo Onsen Station, Itsukushima Shrine, Ishitegawa Park, and Shiroyama Park. Shaking the mikoshi is believed to enhance the spiritual power of God and promote the activation of the soul. The more vigorously the mikoshi is shaken, the greater the satisfaction with God.

Overall, the Matsuyama Autumn Festival is a vibrant celebration that showcases Matsuyama City's rich cultural heritage and deep respect for tradition.
