Tokyo Auto Salon東京オートサロン

The Tokyo Auto Salon originated in 1983 under the name "Tokyo Exciting Car Show," initiated by the first editor-in-chief of the tuning car magazine OPTION. Its purpose was to globalize and promote the custom car culture.

By its fifth edition in 1987, the event was rebranded as the "Tokyo Auto Salon." The venue underwent expansions over the years, starting at the Tokyo International Trade Fair in Harumi and later moving to Tokyo Big Sight in 1997 and Makuhari Messe in 1999. The utilization of various sections within Makuhari Messe, including the international exhibition hall, event hall, and outdoor exhibition space, became integral to the event. The Tokyo Auto Salon gained popularity internationally, especially in Asian countries, contributing to an increasing number of foreign attendees. Over time, it transformed into the widely recognized "annual custom car festival."

Initially, the show primarily featured shops focused on tuning and dressing up vehicles, along with the introduction and display of new parts and technologies. As the 1990s progressed, domestic car manufacturers began participating, unveiling new car models in tandem with the Tokyo Auto Salon. The 2000s witnessed a surge in overseas exhibitors, including European and American automakers, thereby elevating the global profile of the Japanese custom car market.

As the event's exhibitor count grew and the range of automobile-related products diversified, the exhibition's content evolved. Modern iterations showcase an array of products spanning custom parts, automotive-themed games, and fashion items. Additionally, the event encompasses elements such as motor sports presentations, demonstrations of racing vehicles and new cars in outdoor areas, and entertainment segments featuring popular artists. The Tokyo Auto Salon has broadened its appeal to encompass not only avid car enthusiasts but also families, offering a multifaceted experience.

Since 2013, the Tokyo Auto Salon has expanded its reach to international venues, including Singapore, Bangkok, and Malaysia. These endeavors have elevated the event's status as a global custom car show. The Tokyo Auto Salon now welcomes nearly 1,000 media outlets from around the world and stands as one of the three major custom car shows globally, alongside the SEMA Show in the United States and the Essen Motor Show in Germany.

As it approaches its 42nd year with "TOKYO AUTO SALON 2024," the event continues to evolve and cater to a diverse range of car enthusiasts. By collaborating with stakeholders, the organizers aim to enhance the vibrancy of the automobile industry and embrace new opportunities for growth and innovation.
