Ōjiyama Kofun皇子山古墳群
The Ōjiyama Kofun is a burial mound from the Kofun period (300-538 AD) located in the Nishikori neighborhood of the city of Ōtsu, on the south part of the west bank of Lake Biwa. Excavated in 1964 and 1970, four burial facilities were found in the front and one in the back, but no detailed investigation was done and no grave goods were recovered. Believed to have been constructed in the late 4th century, it is the oldest known tumulus in the Ōmi region, possibly connected to the powerful Wani clan which ruled the area during the Kofun period. The tumulus was restored from 1981 to 1985 and is now part of a public archaeological park. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1974.
