Miho Museumミホ ミュージアム

The Miho Museum, opened in 1997, is home to Mihoko Koyama's personal collection of Asian and Western antiques, with about 3000 pieces from various regions and time periods including Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Middle East, Gandhara, China, and Japan. Its striking architecture, designed by renowned American architect I. M. Pei, has earned the museum fame. The building, named "Shangri-La" by Pei, blends into the hilly, forested landscape with 75% of its 17,400 square meter space underground. The roof is a glass and steel structure, while the walls, floor, and exterior are made of warm beige French limestone, the same material used in the Louvre's reception hall.
