Mount Takao高尾山
Mount Takao (Takao-san) is a prominent peak in Hachiōji, Tokyo, Japan, nestled within Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park. Standing at 599 meters (1,965 ft) and conveniently located an hour from downtown Tokyo, it's a favored hiking destination with eight trails and over 2.5 million annual visitors. The mountain is associated with the Shinto-Buddhist tengu, legendary creatures, and is renowned for Shugendō, a disciplined mountain asceticism.
Takao boasts the Tama Forest Science Garden at its base and the Takaosan Yakuōin Yūkiji temple of the Shingon Buddhist sect. Hiking to the peak takes around 90 minutes, with options to start from the base or use a funicular/ropeway. Visitors can also bypass these services via various trails. The summit offers connections to wider hiking networks and features a monkey park, historic cedars, and multiple observation decks.
Despite its urban proximity, Mount Takao hosts over 1,200 plant species, diverse native wildlife (including boars and monkeys), and has gained fame for its autumn foliage and cherry blossoms. Climate change has impacted cherry blossom timings. The construction of the Ken-Ō Expressway posed a threat but the mountain's vibrant ecosystem persists.
Overall, Mount Takao combines natural allure, cultural significance, and recreational opportunities, drawing countless visitors seeking both scenic beauty and spiritual connection.
