Obi Castle飫肥城

Obi Castle is a hirayama-style castle that was originally completed in 1588. It was built by the Tsuchimochi clan during the Nanboku-cho period, but most of its current structure dates back to the mid-1400s. It played a significant role in conflicts between the Ito and Shimazu clans. The Shimazu clan initially held control of the castle, but it was seized by the Ito clan in 1587. The Ito clan continued to rule from the castle until the Meiji period, and it was expanded and fortified during their tenure. The castle was a center of power for the Obi Domain. After falling into disrepair, the castle was completely refurbished in the late 1970s. Along with the castle's restoration, work was also done on the castle town to make it historically authentic to the Edo period.
