Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium名古屋港水族館

The Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium is a public aquarium located in Minato-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture and opened in 1992. It is the largest public aquarium in Japan in terms of tank capacity and total area. It boasts Japan's largest dolphin show tank and houses a breeding research center for penguins and sea turtles.

Highlights

  • Sea turtles

The artificial hatching of loggerhead turtles was a success in 1995, marking the first such hatching in Japan at an indoor artificial spawning ground. Since 2003, in collaboration with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), young loggerhead turtles have been tagged and released to study their migratory routes in the North Pacific using satellite tracking.

  • Penguins

Successful breeding of Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie penguins has been achieved at the aquarium, as well as emperor penguins.

  • Beluga whales

On July 17, 2004, the first beluga whale birth in captivity in Japan took place.
