Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru青函連絡船メモリアルシップ八甲田丸

The Hakkodamaru, launched on April 15, 1964, served as a ferry between Aomori and Hakodate until its retirement on March 13, 1988. Over its more than 20-year service, the ship underwent modifications and modernizations. After being decommissioned, it became a museum ship in July 1990.

Operated by the nonprofit Aomori Minato Club since 2006, the Hakkodamaru, along with its sister ship, the Mashū Maru, is a protected cultural property and the only accessible museum ferry in Japan. The Yōtei Maru, another sister ship, operated as a museum but was closed and dismantled in 2012.

As a museum ship, the Hakkodamaru is open daily from April to October, offering guided tours. Visitors can explore most parts of the ship, including the bridge and engine room, in its original condition as of 1988. Historical railcars and wagons are displayed on the former cargo deck, while one of the ferry's propellers can be seen near Aomori's harbor.

The Hakkodamaru previously housed a restaurant from 1990 to 2006 but has since closed under new ownership.
