Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park地獄谷野猿公苑
The Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture is famed for its wild Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, relaxing in hot springs. This unique destination allows visitors to observe these animals in their natural habitat.
Set in a forested valley with steep cliffs, the park’s name, "Jigokudani" ("Hell Valley"), reflects its steaming hot springs and rugged terrain. Despite the name, the atmosphere is peaceful, especially in winter when snow blankets the area, creating a striking contrast with the steaming springs.
A 1.6-kilometer trail through the forest leads to the park, offering a moderately easy walk. Sturdy footwear is advisable during snowy or muddy conditions.
The highlight is watching snow monkeys bathe in the hot springs—a rare and fascinating behavior. Visitors can observe their playful and social interactions, but must respect their space as the monkeys remain wild.
Unlike zoos, the park ensures the monkeys’ freedom, allowing for an authentic wildlife experience. Photography is welcome, though flash use is discouraged.
Open year-round, the park is most popular in winter (December to March) when the snowy landscape and red-faced monkeys create a postcard-perfect scene. Spring and autumn also offer stunning views with fewer visitors.
