Uwajima Castle宇和島城

Uwajima Castle is a historical castle located in the city of Uwajima in the former Iyo Province of Japan. Originally built on the seashore, it was expanded and rebuilt over centuries by different rulers, including Toda Katsutaka, Tōdō Takatora, and Date Hidemune. The castle was known for its innovative pentagonal layout of moats and walls, making it difficult for attackers to attack any one side without having blind spots to their flanks. The Castle was damaged by earthquakes in 1649, 1854, and underwent major repairs and restoration works. The castle was the home of Date clan until the Meiji restoration. Uwajima Castle is now in the center of the city due to land reclamation.
