Koiji Fire Festival恋路火祭り

The Noto Koiji Coast's Koiji Fire Festival is deeply rooted in the romantic and tragic lore of the region. The festival is celebrated in Noto Uchiuramachi, where the Koiji (Pathway of Love) Coast is located, known for its calm sea and scenic beauty. The name "Koiji" comes from a local legend about a love story, and the festival serves to commemorate this story and comfort the spirits of the lovers involved. The festival is particularly known for its use of Kiriko lanterns—large, ornately decorated wooden lanterns. These lanterns are carried by young men who venture into the sea towards Benten Island, creating a stunning visual effect against the night sky.

Fireworks are a major part of the festival, with displays lighting up the sky above Benten Island. The event also features unique fire rituals, including the burning of a structure known as 'Abura-mono'. This structure is special to the Koiji district and is crafted each year with hidden words that are revealed as the fire burns, adding an element of surprise and excitement for the attendees.

The climax of the festival involves the ignition of a large torch that illuminates the area, casting a dramatic glow that highlights the red torii gate of Benten Island and the Kiriko lanterns. Young men enhance this spectacle by spinning small torches attached to bamboo poles, creating captivating rings of fire.
