Ameyoko Marketアメヤ横丁

Ameyoko Market is a bustling open-air market in the Taito Ward of Tokyo, located near Ueno Station. It covers an area of about 164,227 square feet and stretches from just behind the Yodobashi Camera building to the Komuro building along the Yamanote Line.

There are two theories about the origin of the name "Ameya." One suggests it comes from "ameya," meaning candy shop, due to the many candy stores that once lined the street during a time when sugar was scarce. Even today, some stores still sell candy there. The other theory is that it's a reference to "America," as there used to be stores selling surplus American military goods after World War II. Regardless of its origin, the market is now commonly referred to simply as "ameyoko."

With over 180 shops, Ameya-Yokochō offers a wide variety of products, from fresh food and seafood to clothing and watches.
