Furukuma Shrine

Furukuma Shrine古熊神社

The Furukuma Shrine is located in Yamaguchi City and serves as a Tenman-gu Shrine. The main deity enshrined is Sugawara no Michizane, and his child, Sugawara Fukube Doji, is also enshrined. The shrine was founded in 1373 by Hiroyo Ōuchi, the 24th head of the Ōuchi family, and was established in the centre of modern-day Yamaguchi as a way to make the city more like Kyoto. The lord of the Ōuchi family, solicited the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane from the Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine in Kyoto and built a shrine around the Yamaguchi Izutsuya. During the Edo period, the Mōri clan came to rule Yamaguchi, and Hidenari Mōri, the first lord of the Chōshū Domain, transferred the shrine to its current location in 1618. In 1862, shortly after the Meiji Restoration, the shrine was renamed to its current name.
