Reconstructed Tatsumi yagura of Sunpu Castle in Shizuoka

Sunpu Castle駿府城

The castle was reportedly built by the Imagawa clan during the Muromachi period, but its exact date is unknown. In 1585, Tokugawa Ieyasu built Sunpu Castle on the same site as the former Imagawa fortification. Over time, the castle changed ownership and was rebuilt several times after fires, except for the donjon which was never reconstructed after the fire in 1635. In 1889, the castle grounds became property of Shizuoka City, with some parts turned into a park and others used for government offices. In 1896, a large portion was used as a base by the Imperial Japanese Army, then transferred to the city government in 1949, which converted it into Sunpu Park. In 1989 and 1996, reconstruction projects restored the Tatsumi Yagura tower and eastern gate.
