Tokyo Game Show東京ゲームショウ
The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is an annual video game trade fair and convention held in September at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) and Nikkei Business Publications, Inc., TGS is a prominent event in the gaming industry calendar. The convention is recognized for its emphasis on Japanese video games, while also providing a platform for international game developers to showcase upcoming releases and related hardware. The event spans four days in total, with the first two days dedicated exclusively to industry attendees (business professionals), and the latter two days open to the general public.
History-wise, the inaugural Tokyo Game Show took place in 1996. From 1996 to 2002, the show occurred biannually—once in the Spring and once in Autumn—taking place at the Tokyo Big Sight. Since 2002, the convention transitioned to an annual schedule. Over the years, TGS has grown in popularity, with increasing visitor numbers. Notably, the 2011 edition attracted more than 200,000 attendees, followed by 223,753 attendees in 2012. The highest attendance was recorded in 2016, with a notable turnout of 271,224 attendees and participation from 614 exhibiting companies.
TGS has persevered as an annual event since its inception in 1996, avoiding cancellations. However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 editions had to be conducted solely online. In 2022, the convention returned to its traditional in-person format.
Overall, the Tokyo Game Show holds a prominent position within the gaming industry, offering a platform for both domestic and international game developers to exhibit their creations, engage with fans, and unveil upcoming products. Its consistent growth and evolving format reflect the ever-changing landscape of the gaming world.
