Osaka Tenmangū大阪天満宮

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, affectionately known among Osaka's residents as "Tenjin-san of Tenma," is a Shinto shrine situated in Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka City. Its origins trace back to the first year of the Hakuchi era (650 AD), during Emperor Kotoku's construction of Naniwa Palace, when the Daishogun Shrine was established as the guardian deity in the northwest, laying the foundation for this shrine.

In the third year of the Enki era (903 AD), following the passing of Sugawara no Michizane, a renowned scholar, poet, and statesman, he was deified as Tenjin, a deity associated with academics, scholarship, learning, and the intelligentsia. The veneration of Tenjin gained popularity during this time. Furthermore, in the third year of the Tenryaku era (949 AD), a miraculous story circulated in the capital about seven pine trees growing in front of the Daishogun Shrine, strongly connected to Michizane, emitting a divine light. In response, Emperor Murakami issued an imperial decree to establish the Tenmangu Shrine at this very location. Consequently, the Daishogun Shrine was relegated to an auxiliary position, and the new Tenmangu Shrine became the central focus.

Over the course of its existence, this shrine has endured several fires and undergone multiple reconstructions. However, the current main hall was rebuilt, and the shrine was fully restored in the fourteenth year of the Tenpo era (1843).

During the Meiji period, the shrine gained recognition as a Prefectural Shrine (Fusha), but it is presently listed as a separate-designation shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
