Ōsu Kannon大須観音

Ōsu Kannon is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in the city of Ōsu in central Nagoya, officially named Kitanosan Shinpuku-ji Hōshō-in. It was built in 1333 in Nagaoka village in Owari Province and was moved to its current location by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612 due to frequent flooding. After being damaged by fire in the 1820s, it was reconstructed in the 1970s.

The temple boasts a vast collection of books, including over 15,000 Japanese and Chinese classics, with the oldest being a Shinpukuji manuscript of the Kojiki called the Records of Ancient Matters transcribed by the monk Ken'yu in 1371-1372. This manuscript, which contains the ancient mythological history of Japan, is designated as a national treasure. The library also holds other books designated as national treasures and important cultural properties.
